AUGUSTA, ME — (July 8, 2026) — Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee in Maine’s U.S. Senate race, announced in a video posted to X that he is “suspending campaign operations” after a series of scandals escalated into rape allegations that he continues to deny.
The announcement marks a dramatic collapse for Platner’s once-surging campaign against Republican Sen. Susan Collins, a race Democrats viewed as critical to their chances of reshaping the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.

Platner posted an 11-minute video on social media, telling supporters that while his name may remain on the ballot, the movement behind his campaign “belongs to the people of Maine.” He also insisted that the sexual assault allegations against him are “all false.”

Rape Allegation Triggers Campaign Freefall
The breaking point came after Jenny Racicot, a Maine resident and former girlfriend of Platner, accused him of sexually assaulting her. Racicot spoke to Politico and later described the alleged incident during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, saying she viewed what happened as rape.
Platner has repeatedly denied the allegations.
The accusations followed earlier controversies involving resurfaced offensive Reddit posts, allegations of troubling behavior in past relationships, and scrutiny over a tattoo associated with Nazi imagery that Platner later had covered.
Democrats Pull Support as Pressure Builds
Platner’s campaign had already faced growing pressure from within the Democratic Party, but the latest allegation triggered a wave of withdrawn endorsements and public calls for him to step aside.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, one of Platner’s most prominent early supporters, withdrew his backing. The Maine Democratic Party also urged Platner to exit the race, while party leaders moved quickly to address how a replacement nominee could be selected.
The timing is especially significant because Platner had already won Maine’s Democratic primary. Under Maine election rules, Democrats have a limited window to replace him on the ballot.
LGBTQ Rights Stance Complicates the Political Narrative
Before the campaign imploded, Platner had positioned himself as a strong supporter of LGBTQ rights. When asked about attacks on LGBTQIA+ freedoms, Platner said he would stand directly in the way of anyone trying to target the community.
That stance made him a notable progressive voice in a state race closely watched by LGBTQ voters, labor groups, and national Democrats. However, the allegations and surrounding controversies have now overshadowed his policy platform and placed the party’s focus on damage control.
Polling Fallout Hits a Must-Win Senate Race
Political analyst Nate Silver noted that Platner’s internal polling showed him trailing Collins by five points, suggesting the gap could be wider in nonpartisan polling. His campaign’s declining numbers added to Democratic concerns that the scandals were weakening their chances in one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races.
For Democrats, Maine remains a high-stakes battleground. Collins has long been one of the most recognizable Republican incumbents in the Senate, and any Democratic nominee will now have to rebuild trust quickly while trying to unite voters after a damaging political collapse.
Platner Denies Allegations While Ending Campaign Operations
Platner’s suspension video attempted to separate his personal denial from the future of the campaign’s broader movement. He framed the decision as necessary for the political effort to continue without him at the center.
Still, the fallout leaves Maine Democrats racing to stabilize the contest, select a replacement nominee, and prevent a critical Senate opportunity from slipping away.
For LGBTQ voters and political observers, the Platner story is now a complicated chapter: a candidate who publicly backed LGBTQ rights, but whose campaign ended under the weight of serious allegations he denies.
