BERLIN, Germany — (July 26, 2026) — The suspect accused of carrying out Saturday night’s deadly attack near Berlin’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride celebration was shot and killed Sunday evening during a police operation in the city’s Spandau district, bringing a dramatic end to a massive manhunt that gripped Germany for nearly 24 hours.




Berlin Police confirmed the suspect died after confronting officers from the city’s Special Operations Command (SEK) at an allotment garden complex around 6:00 p.m. local time.

In a statement posted on X, authorities said:

“According to current findings, he is said to have rushed toward our emergency forces with a stabbing weapon, after which police firearms were used by our SEK Berlin. Despite immediate resuscitation measures initiated by the Berlin Fire Department, he died at the scene.”

The fatal confrontation concluded an intensive citywide search that followed one of the deadliest attacks ever carried out against Berlin’s annual Pride celebration.




Attack Left One Dead and Multiple Victims Injured

The violence unfolded late Saturday when a rental van plowed into pedestrians near the Tiergarten area as thousands were celebrating Christopher Street Day. Authorities say the suspect also attacked several people with a bladed weapon before fleeing the scene on foot.

One woman was killed, while numerous others suffered injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening, prompting officials to cancel the remainder of Berlin Pride festivities as emergency crews secured the area.




Investigation Continues

German prosecutors have identified the suspect as a 21-year-old German national previously known to authorities. Earlier Sunday, investigators disclosed the suspect had prior convictions and had recently been convicted in a terrorism-related case involving preparations for a serious act of violence. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether anyone else assisted in planning or carrying out the attack.

Officials have not announced additional arrests, but investigators continue examining digital evidence, witness testimony, and forensic material recovered from both the attack scene and the location where the suspect was located.




Berlin Reaffirms Support for LGBTQ+ Community

The attack has prompted renewed security concerns surrounding LGBTQ+ events across Europe while drawing widespread condemnation from political leaders and LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations.

Berlin officials have pledged continued support for the city’s LGBTQ+ community, emphasizing that acts of terror will not undermine the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion celebrated during Christopher Street Day.
