BERLIN, GR — (July 25, 2026) — A celebration of equality and inclusion turned into tragedy Saturday night after a white van crashed into crowds attending Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride celebration, leaving one person dead and at least 16 others injured, according to German authorities. Several victims remain in critical condition as police continue an intensive search for the driver, who fled the scene following the crash.




The deadly incident occurred shortly before 10:00 p.m. local time near Tiergarten Park, close to Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate, where hundreds of thousands of people had gathered for one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene after the vehicle reportedly struck multiple pedestrians before crashing into a tree. Authorities immediately declared a major emergency operation, deploying police officers, firefighters, ambulances, and specialized rescue teams throughout the area.

Massive Emergency Response

Berlin police confirmed that the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Investigators launched a citywide manhunt while urging members of the public to avoid the area as emergency personnel treated victims.

CNN International correspondent Frederik Pleitgen, reporting from Berlin, described the scene as a “mass casualty event,” with emergency tents established to treat victims and dozens of rescue vehicles surrounding the affected area.

Witnesses told reporters they heard a loud impact as the van drove into the crowd before coming to rest against a tree. Many attendees remained in shock as emergency crews worked through the night.




Pride Celebration Abruptly Cancelled

Organizers immediately cancelled the remainder of Berlin’s Christopher Street Day festivities following the incident.

The annual Pride celebration commemorates the 1969 Stonewall uprising and is regarded as one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ events, regularly attracting hundreds of thousands of participants from across Germany and around the world. Saturday’s festivities had proceeded peacefully throughout the day before the deadly crash occurred.

Investigation Remains Active

Authorities have not yet officially determined whether the incident was intentional or accidental. Police continue to investigate all possible motives while collecting witness statements, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence.

Officials have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or recorded video near the crash site to contact investigators as the search for the suspect continues.
