Sir Ian McKellen News, Entertainment and LGBTQ Advocacy — Sir Ian McKellen is an acclaimed British stage and screen actor whose career spans Shakespearean theatre, Broadway and internationally recognized roles including Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films and Magneto in the X-Men franchise.
A prominent advocate for LGBTQ equality, McKellen publicly came out in 1988 during opposition to Britain’s Section 28 and became a co-founder of Stonewall UK. His connection with Troye Sivan dates to 2010, when Sivan appeared as the Boy alongside McKellen’s Estragon in a touring production of Waiting for Godot.
In 2026, the two generations of gay performers reunited creatively when McKellen provided the opening narration for Sivan’s medieval-themed “Party” official music video.
