BOCA RATON, FL — A groundbreaking new educational institution is set to open its doors this August in South Florida, offering a dedicated safe haven for LGBTQ students and others who have experienced bullying, discrimination, or exclusion in traditional school environments.

The newly launched Acceptance Academy Community School in Boca Raton is positioning itself as one of the first schools of its kind in the region—designed not only to provide safety, but to foster academic growth, confidence, and long-term success for its students.

“There’s great excitement about what we’re doing,” said Stephen Gaskill, president of the Acceptance Academy Foundation. “There’s also some skepticism, quite frankly, but we know this is a school that deserves its place here in South Florida.”

The school’s opening comes at a time when LGBTQ education issues remain at the center of national debate. In Florida, recent legislation—including the widely debated Parental Rights in Education Act—has intensified conversations surrounding LGBTQ visibility, student protections, and the role of inclusive education.

Gaskill emphasized that policies limiting classroom discussions and representation can have a direct emotional and academic impact on students.

“When students feel marginalized—whether through legislation, school policies, or peer behavior—it affects their ability to learn and thrive,” he said. “Our mission is to remove those barriers.”

At the core of Acceptance Academy’s educational model is a problem-based learning approach, designed to engage students through real-world challenges and community-driven projects. School principal Dr. Mindy Koch explained that this method encourages deeper learning by connecting academic subjects to issues students care about.

“Problem-based learning allows students to step into their communities, identify challenges, and become part of the solution,” Koch said. “It transforms education into something meaningful and empowering.”

Data continues to underscore the need for supportive environments. A 2025 study by the LGBTQ education organization GLSEN found that a significant number of LGBTQ students feel unsafe at school, with many reporting experiences of discrimination, exclusion, or harassment. These conditions often lead to decreased academic performance and lower overall engagement.

“When students are focused on their safety or how they’re being perceived, they’re not able to focus on learning,” said Tracey Labgold, Florida Education and Training Manager for Keshet. “Creating an affirming environment is essential for academic success.”

Despite its specialized focus, Gaskill made clear that Acceptance Academy will meet the same academic standards as any traditional school.

“There’s really no difference in the level of education,” he said. “The difference is that we’re serving students who need an accepting space—supported by adults who believe in who they are and their potential.”

The school will operate in partnership with the Boca Raton Achievement Center and is currently accepting applications ahead of its August launch.

For many families, educators, and advocates, the arrival of Acceptance Academy represents more than just a new school—it signals a shift toward addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ students in a rapidly evolving educational landscape.
