WASHINGTON, D.C. — (October 18, 2026) — NBC News moderator Kristen Welker confronted openly gay U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during Sunday’s Meet the Press, challenging the Trump administration’s continued criticism of former President Joe Biden as inflation climbs and American households face mounting financial pressure.

The heated exchange came after newly released economic data showed annual consumer inflation accelerating to 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August, raising fresh concerns about the direction of the U.S. economy.

Welker Challenges Bessent Over Trump’s Economic Record

During the interview, Welker questioned whether President Donald Trump’s economic policies were contributing to rising consumer prices, particularly as the conflict involving Iran continues to disrupt global energy markets.

Bessent defended the administration, arguing that higher energy costs represented a supply shock rather than evidence of widespread economic deterioration.

However, Welker challenged his decision to revisit inflation under the Biden administration while Trump has occupied the White House for more than 20 months.

“I hear you blaming President Biden, but President Trump has been in office now for 636 days,” Welker said.

She pressed Bessent to explain when the administration would accept responsibility for current economic conditions.

Bessent responded with a declaration:

“Well, we will own the economy.”

The Treasury secretary pointed to private-sector employment gains, household wealth and the administration’s economic policies as evidence of progress, while acknowledging that additional improvements were necessary.

Inflation, Energy Prices and the Impact on LGBTQ-Owned Businesses

The economic confrontation carries broader implications for America’s LGBTQ business community, including independent retailers, hospitality operators, entertainment companies and small-business owners.

Rising fuel prices can increase shipping and distribution expenses, while persistent inflation can reduce consumer purchasing power and squeeze operating margins.

For LGBTQ-owned businesses operating in competitive retail and service markets, sustained price increases could complicate inventory planning, hiring decisions and customer spending.

Although the latest inflation report does not measure LGBTQ-owned businesses separately, its findings highlight economic pressures affecting businesses across the country.

Scott Bessent’s Historic LGBTQ Role Meets Economic Accountability

Bessent made history in January 2025 when he became the first openly gay U.S. Treasury Secretary, placing an LGBTQ official at the center of American fiscal and economic policymaking.

His appointment represented a significant milestone in LGBTQ representation within the federal government.

Now, as Treasury secretary, Bessent faces the same scrutiny as any senior economic official responsible for defending administration policy.

The latest Meet the Press exchange underscores the growing political stakes surrounding inflation, energy costs and economic confidence ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections.

As the Trump administration continues defending its economic strategy, the central question for American households and businesses remains whether promised improvements will translate into meaningful relief at the gas pump, in operating expenses and across the broader consumer economy.
