LAS VEGAS, NV — (October 1, 2026) — Lil Nas X is officially back! The Grammy-winning rapper and singer returned Thursday, October 1, with “World’s Greatest!”, a deeply personal new single accompanied by a cinematic six-minute music video that takes Montero Hill back to where his story began.

Filmed in his hometown of Atlanta and directed by Phillip Youmans, the visual moves between the Lil Nas X audiences know today and dramatized memories of his childhood, creating a conversation between the superstar and the young Montero who existed long before worldwide fame.

And beneath the choreography, childhood memories and triumphant message is something considerably more personal. The video is dedicated to his late mother, Tamikia Hill.

Lil Nas X Looks Back Before Moving Forward

“World’s Greatest!” marks Lil Nas X’s first new music since March 2025 and signals the beginning of another chapter for an artist whose career has repeatedly been built around reinvention.

This time, however, the spectacle takes a back seat to reflection.

Written entirely by Lil Nas X and produced by C.WRAY and Steve Rusch, the song moves through struggle, perseverance and self-belief while looking at the distance between Montero’s childhood and the life he ultimately created for himself.

Youmans brings those ideas directly into the video.

Present-day Lil Nas X is shown working through choreography while scenes from his childhood gradually unfold around him. Young versions of Montero and members of his family populate those memories, transforming the video from a conventional performance piece into a visual reflection on where he came from.

As the story progresses, those two worlds increasingly intersect.

Rather than running away from the past, “World’s Greatest!” presents it as part of the foundation carrying him forward.

The video is dedicated to his late mother, Tamikia Hill.

‘Walk by Faith, Not by Sight’

At the center of the release is Lil Nas X’s relationship with his mother.

Hill died in August 2026, with Lil Nas X publicly announcing her death later that month.

Ahead of the new single, he shared that one of his mother’s favorite sayings was “Walk by faith, not by sight,” explaining that the message has taken on greater meaning as he moves through his own life.

That connection becomes increasingly important as the music video approaches its conclusion.

The childhood story ultimately leads back to Hill, with the visual ending as a tribute to the woman whose words continue to accompany her son into the next stage of his life.

It gives “World’s Greatest!” a dramatically different tone from many of the provocative, larger-than-life visuals that helped turn Lil Nas X into one of pop music’s most recognizable artists.

This time, Montero isn’t trying to shock the world.

He’s looking back at the people and experiences that helped him survive it.

Young Montero Takes Center Stage

The production assembled an extensive cast to recreate pieces of Lil Nas X’s early life.

Aaron Kingsley Adetola portrays Young Montero, while Allen McMorris plays Young Tramon, Malia Williams portrays Young Bianca, Elijah Pope appears as Young Lamarco and Zabrina Hopkins plays Young Shaquisha.

Trude Namara portrays Tamikia Hill, King Akin appears as Robert Stafford and Linda Shusser portrays Montero’s grandmother.

Movement also plays a major role in telling the story.

Jakevis Thomason served as choreographer, assisted by Juan Miguel Posada, while Duriel Porter appears in the video as the choreographer working with present-day Lil Nas X.

Behind the camera, Gus Bendellini served as cinematographer, with Danielle Wright, Erica Snowden and Saul Levitz producing the project.

‘World’s Greatest!’ Opens a New Lil Nas X Era

There is no shortage of history behind Lil Nas X as he steps back into the spotlight.

“Old Town Road” transformed him into an international phenomenon. MONTERO established that his breakthrough wasn’t going to define the limits of his career, while tracks including “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” “INDUSTRY BABY” and “THAT’S WHAT I WANT” pushed his music and unapologetically queer identity further into mainstream pop culture.

“World’s Greatest!” approaches the next chapter differently.

The new video doesn’t erase everything that came before it.

It embraces it.

Young Montero, his family, Atlanta, his struggles and his mother’s memory are all woven into the story of the artist standing in front of the camera today.

And after an extended absence from new music, Lil Nas X has chosen to return not by inventing another character—but by looking directly at the person who was there before the world knew his name.
