Marvel’s Wolverine LGBTQ Censorship Reports

MIDDLE EAST NEWS — (September 23, 2026) — Sony Interactive Entertainment and Insomniac Games are facing questions over regional versions of Marvel’s Wolverine after players documented apparent edits removing references to a same-sex marriage involving Mystique and Tyger.

The PlayStation 5 blockbuster officially launched September 15, 2026, with Insomniac developing the single-player action-adventure game alongside Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment.

But only days after launch, players began posting footage that appears to show something considerably different depending on where the game is being played.

Mystique’s Marriage Gets Blurred and Muted

A video posted to Reddit’s r/PlayWolverine community shows several apparent alterations involving Mystique and Tyger.

An in-game photograph depicting their wedding is blurred. Dialogue identifying Tyger as Mystique’s wife is apparently muted while surrounding audio continues normally. Other dialogue referring to their relationship disappears, while subtitles reportedly substitute asterisks for censored language.

The Reddit user who posted the compilation said they initially thought the missing material was a glitch before encountering additional altered scenes.

Separate players have posted screenshots from regional copies, including a player questioning why the relationship was censored in Lebanon.

Exactly how broadly the altered version is being distributed remains unclear.

Reports frequently describe it as a Middle East version, but available evidence does not establish that every country in the region receives identical edits.

Wolverine Isn’t Insomniac’s First Regional Edit

The controversy has a precedent.

Regional releases of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 were also altered in parts of the Middle East, with Pride imagery removed and material involving a gay couple changed or removed.

That makes the Wolverine situation part of a broader issue facing international game publishers: whether to modify LGBTQ content to satisfy local content restrictions or risk having major releases unavailable in certain markets.

For gamers, however, the result can mean buying what is technically the same blockbuster and receiving a noticeably different version of its story.

Sony Hasn’t Explained the Changes

Neither the player footage nor the reporting establishes who specifically directed the alterations.

Game Developer reported that it contacted PlayStation seeking comment, while Kotaku also contacted Sony. Neither publication reported receiving an explanation at the time their stories were published.

That leaves a central question unanswered: which markets received the altered version of Marvel’s Wolverine, and why were those specific scenes changed?

Until Sony or Insomniac addresses the reports, players are doing the comparison themselves — and Mystique’s mysteriously disappearing marriage is becoming difficult to miss.
