LAS VEGAS, NV — (May 29, 2026) — Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has emerged as the early leader in a new hypothetical 2028 Democratic presidential primary survey, highlighting the growing national profile of one of America’s most prominent LGBTQ political figures.

According to a new Emerson College Polling survey released Thursday, Buttigieg received 18 percent support among Democratic primary voters, narrowly leading California Governor Gavin Newsom, who earned 16 percent support. The findings arrive as Democratic voters continue debating the future direction of the party following the setbacks of the 2024 election cycle.

Buttigieg Leads Crowded Democratic Field

The Emerson survey found a competitive race among several nationally recognized Democratic figures.

Following Buttigieg and Newsom, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez received 11 percent support. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and former Vice President Kamala Harris each earned 10 percent support, while Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear received 9 percent.

An additional 18 percent of Democratic voters surveyed remained undecided, indicating the race remains highly fluid more than two years before the first votes of the 2028 presidential election cycle are expected to be cast.

Political observers note that the latest polling shows modest gains for Buttigieg, Ocasio-Cortez, and Beshear compared with previous surveys, while support for Newsom and Harris has softened slightly.

2028 Speculation Continues to Grow

While Buttigieg has not announced plans to seek the presidency in 2028, speculation intensified following remarks made during an appearance at the National Action Network convention last month.

As first reported by The Hill, Rev. Al Sharpton referenced a previous campaign meeting with Buttigieg and jokingly asked whether he should reserve a table at Harlem’s famous Sylvia’s Restaurant for another presidential campaign.

“You save me a seat, I’ll be there,” Buttigieg responded, according to The Hill, without directly addressing whether he intends to enter the race.

The comment immediately fueled additional speculation among political analysts and Democratic activists about a possible second White House bid.

LGBTQ Representation Remains a Historic Factor

Buttigieg made history in 2020 as the first openly gay presidential candidate to win a presidential primary contest and later became the first openly LGBTQ Cabinet secretary confirmed by the United States Senate.

Should he ultimately launch a 2028 presidential campaign, Buttigieg would once again represent a groundbreaking figure for LGBTQ political representation at the national level.

His growing support in early polling may signal increasing comfort among voters with LGBTQ candidates seeking the nation’s highest office.

Newsom, Harris and Ocasio-Cortez Remain Major Contenders

Despite Buttigieg’s early lead, several high-profile Democrats remain potential contenders.

Newsom continues to maintain a significant national profile through his frequent clashes with President Trump and conservative leaders.

Meanwhile, Harris has publicly indicated she may consider another presidential campaign after serving as the Democratic nominee in 2024.

Ocasio-Cortez has also drawn attention as a rising progressive voice within the party. When asked recently about 2028 speculation, she emphasized that her goals extend beyond holding elected office.

“They assume that my ambition is a title or a seat, and my ambition is way bigger than that. My ambition is to change this country,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Poll Details

The Emerson College Polling survey was conducted May 24-25 among 1,000 likely voters nationwide.

For the Democratic primary sample of 432 likely Democratic voters, the survey reported a credibility interval of 4.7 percentage points.

With more than two years remaining before the 2028 Democratic primary season formally begins, political analysts caution that voter preferences could shift significantly as candidates enter the race and national issues evolve.
