LAS VEGAS, NV — (May 17, 2026) — Newly released data is raising serious concerns about the safety of LGBTQ individuals in Israel, challenging long-standing narratives that position the country as a regional safe haven for LGBTQ communities.

A comprehensive 2025 report from The Aguda – The Association for LGBTQ+ Equality in Israel, through its Nir Katz Center for Violence and Discrimination Reporting, documents a sharp increase in anti-LGBTQ violence, harassment, and organized attacks across the country.

Violence and Attacks Reach Alarming Levels

According to the report, a total of 432 homophobic and transphobic incidents were recorded in 2025, with physical assaults occurring at least once per week on average.

Even more concerning, half of all incidents in public spaces involved physical violence, a significant jump from 32% reported in 2024.

The data paints a clear picture of escalating danger, particularly in major urban centers across central and northern regions of Israel.

Organized Ambush Attacks Using Dating Apps

One of the most disturbing trends identified in the report is the rise of coordinated ambush attacks using dating platforms such as Grindr.

Attackers reportedly:

  • Created fake profiles
  • Lured victims into meetings
  • Carried out premeditated group assaults

These attacks often involved groups of 5 to 10 masked individuals, sometimes armed, resulting in severe injuries requiring medical treatment.

Investigators documented more than 20 serious assault cases linked to this tactic between late 2024 and the end of 2025.

Rising Fear and Declining Trust in Authorities

The report also highlights a growing reluctance among LGBTQ individuals to report crimes, citing fear of retaliation and lack of confidence in institutional responses.

  • 3,863 hotline reports were filed in 2025
  • 110 legal inquiries related to homophobic incidents
  • A surge in extortion and threats in public spaces (up to 13.5%)

Meanwhile, online hostility continues to intensify, with:

  • 2,634 documented homophobic comments across media platforms
  • 1,325 pieces of hateful online content tracked by advocacy groups

Widespread Exposure to Homophobia

A nationwide study included in the report reveals the extent of anti-LGBTQ sentiment across Israeli society:

  • 91% of participants experienced some form of homophobia
  • 79% encountered it on social media
  • 76% in public spaces
  • 49% in interactions with state institutions

Trans individuals reported even higher exposure rates across nearly every category, underscoring heightened vulnerability within the community.

Challenging the “Safe Haven” Narrative

For years, Israel has positioned itself internationally as a progressive destination for LGBTQ rights in the Middle East. However, this latest data complicates that narrative.

While legal protections and visible LGBTQ spaces exist, the report underscores a parallel reality — one marked by rising violence, organized attacks, and widespread discrimination.

Advocates argue that acknowledging these internal challenges is critical to ensuring long-term safety and equality for LGBTQ individuals both domestically and internationally.

Advocacy Groups Sound the Alarm

Aguda chairman Nimrod Gorenstein emphasized the urgency of the findings:

“This year’s homophobia report proves that the surging violence and loss of personal security in Israeli society does not skip over the LGBTQ community. Behind the graphs and data stand the testimonies of thousands who experienced violence and discrimination.”

He added that the organization remains committed to combating dehumanization and ensuring that LGBTQ individuals are protected from harm.

A Growing Crisis Demanding Attention

The report concludes that the scale and frequency of attacks seen over the past year are unprecedented in modern Israeli society, signaling a growing crisis that demands both public awareness and policy response.

As global attention continues to focus on LGBTQ rights worldwide, the findings serve as a reminder that even countries perceived as progressive are not immune to rising intolerance and violence.
