WASHINGTON, D.C. — (May 8, 2026) — In a historic move aimed at increasing government transparency, President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have authorized the release of more than 40 minutes of previously classified footage and documents related to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), commonly referred to as UFOs.

The Defense Department confirmed that this marks the beginning of a broader initiative to declassify and publish decades of government-held records involving unexplained aerial encounters.

Officials say the materials will be released in phases over the coming weeks as part of a coordinated, government-wide review process.

Historic UAP Release Signals New Transparency Effort

According to the Department of Defense, the newly released archive represents one of the most extensive public disclosures of UAP-related material to date.

The effort is being conducted in coordination with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and involves the review of millions of documents spanning several decades.

Many of the cases included in the release remain unresolved, meaning officials have not been able to definitively identify the origin or nature of the observed objects.

Apollo 11 Astronaut Buzz Aldrin Described “Unusual” Object

Among the most notable documents is a transcript from the 1969 Apollo 11 mission debriefing.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin described observing an object of significant size during the mission:

“The first unusual thing that we saw… was one day out… It had a sizeable dimension to it, so we put the monocular on it.”

The account adds to a growing archive of historical observations that continue to fuel scientific and public interest in unexplained aerial phenomena.

Footage Shows Objects Moving Across Air, Space, and Ocean

Several of the newly released videos show objects exhibiting unusual flight characteristics, including rapid acceleration and movement across multiple environments.

In some cases, objects appear to be tracked descending from high altitude before entering ocean waters — behavior that has drawn attention from analysts and researchers studying advanced aerospace phenomena.

Defense officials emphasize that these cases remain under investigation and that no definitive conclusions have been reached.

Government Invites Public and Private Sector Analysis

The Department of War stated that due to limited data in some cases, it is encouraging collaboration with private-sector experts, researchers, and the broader scientific community.

Officials acknowledged that many of the archived cases remain unexplained due to incomplete data, sensor limitations, or lack of corroborating evidence.

The department will continue to release additional materials on a rolling basis as they are reviewed and cleared for public access.

What Happens Next

Officials say this release is only the beginning of a long-term transparency initiative that could reshape public understanding of UAP incidents.

As more data becomes available, analysts expect increased scrutiny from both the scientific community and national security experts.

For now, the newly released footage raises more questions than answers — and signals a shift toward greater openness on one of the most debated topics in modern defense history.
