WASHINGTON, D.C. — (August 3, 2026) — Telegram has unexpectedly disappeared from Apple’s App Store in multiple countries, leaving millions of users unable to download the popular messaging platform and fueling speculation over the reason behind its removal.




The company, which reports more than 1 billion monthly active users, remains fully operational for existing users. However, new downloads through Apple’s App Store became unavailable shortly after 01:00 GMT on Tuesday, according to widespread user reports. Neither Apple nor Telegram has publicly explained why the app was removed.

Telegram Faces Longstanding Regulatory Scrutiny

The sudden disappearance comes as Telegram continues to face pressure from governments and regulators over its approach to content moderation.

Founder Pavel Durov has repeatedly defended Telegram’s privacy-first philosophy while facing accusations in several countries that the platform has not done enough to prevent illegal activity, including fraud, extremist content, organized crime, and other illicit communications.

Despite these concerns, Telegram has introduced a series of moderation enhancements during the past year, removing or redesigning several features that critics argued were vulnerable to abuse.




Service Remains Online Worldwide

Although the App Store listing has disappeared in several regions, Telegram itself has not suffered a global outage.

Independent service monitoring platforms continue to report normal operations, with existing users able to send messages, make voice calls, and access channels without widespread disruption.

The latest incident follows a temporary interruption involving Telegram’s t.me short-link domain on July 14, when links were briefly suspended during an Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) compliance review before service was restored.




Regional Restrictions Continue

Telegram has also experienced government-imposed restrictions in several countries throughout 2026.

Russia has continued implementing network throttling and intermittent access disruptions as part of broader internet control measures, while India has periodically limited access following disputes involving specific content hosted on the platform.

Meanwhile, users across online communities have reported that Telegram has quietly retired or significantly modified several features—including the former “Contacts Nearby” function—as the company continues strengthening its moderation policies.




No Official Explanation Yet

At the time of publication, neither Apple nor Telegram has issued an official statement explaining why the app has disappeared from the App Store or when it may return.

Until either company provides clarification, the removal remains one of the most closely watched developments affecting one of the world’s largest encrypted messaging platforms.
