WASHINGTON — (March 8, 2026) — U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signaled that the Donald Trump administration is prepared to escalate military operations against Iran, leaving open the possibility that American ground troops could be deployed if the conflict continues to intensify.

Speaking during an interview broadcast Sunday on 60 Minutes, Hegseth said the administration would be “unwise” to eliminate any military option as U.S. forces continue their campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and military leadership.

“We reserve the right,” Hegseth said when asked whether the United States might eventually send troops into Iran. “We would be completely unwise if we did not reserve the right to take any particular option, whether it included boots on the ground or no boots on the ground.”

The remarks come as the conflict between the United States and Iran enters its second week, with American forces conducting airstrikes and strategic military operations widely reported to be part of the Pentagon campaign known as Operation Epic Fury.

While emphasizing that U.S. forces are currently operating without confirmed ground deployments inside Iran, Hegseth made clear that the administration intends to maintain operational flexibility as the war unfolds.

“People ask whether there will be boots on the ground, how long the operation will last — two weeks, four weeks, six weeks,” Hegseth said during the interview. “President Trump knows — and I know — that you don’t tell the enemy, you don’t tell the press, and you don’t tell anybody what your limits are during a military operation.”

During the interview, correspondent Major Garrett pressed Hegseth on whether covert U.S. forces might already be operating inside Iran. The defense secretary replied that there were currently no “overt or covert forces” deployed in the country before adding with a measured pause that such matters would not be publicly discussed.

“I wouldn’t tell you that if we did,” Hegseth said.

The defense secretary also addressed the mounting human toll of the conflict after Garrett noted that a seventh U.S. service member had died from injuries sustained during the ongoing military operations in the Middle East.

Hegseth acknowledged that casualties are an unavoidable reality of warfare but insisted the losses would not weaken American resolve.

“Things like this don’t happen without casualties,” he said. “There will be more casualties. Our generation understands what it means to see Americans come home in caskets. But that doesn’t weaken us one bit. It stiffens our spine and our resolve to finish this fight.”

U.S. officials are also continuing to investigate a deadly strike that reportedly killed roughly 160 civilians at a school during the escalating conflict. Pentagon officials say it remains unclear whether the strike was carried out by Iranian forces or resulted from nearby military operations.

Despite growing international concern over the expanding conflict, Hegseth reiterated that the administration’s central objective remains preventing Iran from advancing its nuclear weapons program.

“We’re willing to go as far as we need to go in order to be successful,” Hegseth said.
