PHILADELPHIA, PA — (February 27, 2026) — A milestone celebration for Philadelphia Gay News turned into a historic funding announcement this week, as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro committed $4.5 million in new state investment toward LGBTQ housing and youth services in the city.

The announcement came during PGN’s 50th anniversary gala at the National Constitution Center — a symbolic venue honoring civil rights and constitutional freedoms. The funding will directly benefit the William Way LGBT Community Center and The Attic Youth Center, two cornerstone institutions serving Philadelphia’s LGBTQ community.
The combined investment represents one of the most significant public funding commitments to LGBTQ community infrastructure in Pennsylvania in recent years.
Major Investment in William Way LGBT Community Center
Gov. Shapiro confirmed that his administration has committed $2 million toward the renovation and redevelopment of the William Way LGBT Community Center, located at 1315 Spruce Street.
“It’s an incredibly important investment,” Shapiro told attendees. “It’s important that we continue to make forward progress — not just to stand up against the bullies, but to continue to play offense and make progress.”
The William Way LGBT Community Center has operated from its current property since 1996, serving as a hub for archives, cultural programming, social services, meeting spaces, and community gatherings. Previous redevelopment efforts stalled after rising construction costs and funding gaps made earlier expansion plans unattainable.
At one point, board members considered listing the property for sale in 2025 in search of a more affordable alternative. However, a late-stage private donor contribution allowed leadership to pivot back toward renovation with a scaled, more financially viable project.
According to PGN publisher Mark Segal, the updated vision includes:
-
A fully renovated facility
-
Expanded community programming space
-
40 new affordable housing units for LGBTQ seniors
“For the last year, very quietly, a whole group of people have been working underground,” Segal said during the gala. “We are now on the ground floor of reinventing the William Way Community Center.”
Mayor Cherelle Parker also voiced the city’s support, stating that Philadelphia stands ready to match funding commitments to help ensure the project’s success.
The center is currently closed during construction planning, and additional details about final design and timeline are expected in the coming months.
$2.5 Million for The Attic Youth Center
In addition to housing redevelopment, Shapiro announced a $2.5 million investment in The Attic Youth Center, which serves LGBTQ youth ages 14 to 23 throughout the Philadelphia region.
The Attic provides:
-
Counseling and mental health services
-
Safe gathering spaces
-
Life skills programming
-
Leadership development
-
Educational and career readiness support
Shapiro said the funding will help the organization “serve more of our youth and expand their impact all across Pennsylvania.”
At a time when LGBTQ youth mental health concerns and homelessness rates remain disproportionately high nationwide, the funding signals a strategic commitment to long-term stability and protective services for vulnerable young people.
A Symbolic Setting, A Strategic Moment
The PGN anniversary gala was more than a retrospective celebration of five decades of LGBTQ journalism — it became a forward-looking affirmation of continued investment in community infrastructure.
Held at the National Constitution Center, the event underscored both the historical struggle for LGBTQ civil rights and the ongoing political challenges facing the community in 2026. Speakers referenced democratic backsliding and national policy debates, while emphasizing that local and state-level action remains a critical driver of progress.
“We made news here tonight,” Segal emphasized.
The funding announcements reinforced a clear message: despite political headwinds at the national level, Pennsylvania leaders are committing public resources toward strengthening LGBTQ housing security, senior living options, and youth support systems.
What This Means for Philadelphia’s LGBTQ Community
The $4.5 million combined investment could reshape:
-
Affordable housing access for LGBTQ seniors
-
Community center sustainability
-
Youth mental health services
-
Program expansion statewide
With rising housing costs affecting major U.S. cities and LGBTQ seniors often facing isolation or discrimination in traditional housing settings, the William Way redevelopment may become a model for urban LGBTQ housing initiatives nationwide.
Meanwhile, expanded support for The Attic Youth Center addresses one of the most urgent issues in LGBTQ policy: ensuring safe, affirming services for young people navigating identity, education, and family challenges.
As Philadelphia’s LGBTQ community marks 50 years of journalistic advocacy through PGN, this latest investment signals that the next chapter will focus on infrastructure, sustainability, and long-term resilience.
