LAS VEGAS, NV — (November 16, 2025) — LGBTQ Americans are buying guns at a record pace over the surge in hate crime violence. For decades, gun culture in the U.S. was framed as rural, conservative, and overwhelmingly Republican. Today, that picture has radically shifted.
Gun clubs, researchers, and Second Amendment instructors all report explosive growth among liberals, people of color, and LGBTQ Americans — a trend that intensified after Trump’s 2024 reelection and during the spike in hate-motivated violence.

Research from the FBI and multiple civil-rights organizations shows:

  • Anti-LGBTQ hate crimes rose for the 8th straight year, hitting their highest recorded levels.

  • LGBTQ Americans are nine times more likely than the general population to be victims of violent hate crimes (according to the Williams Institute).

  • Transgender Americans experience the highest per-capita murder rate in the LGBTQ community.

Against this landscape, many LGBTQ individuals say gun ownership has shifted from ideology to survival.

Gun Clubs Seeing Unprecedented Liberal & LGBTQ Growth

Organizations like the Liberal Gun Club (with chapters in 30+ states) report membership spikes unseen in their history.

  • Membership rose from 2,700 to over 4,500 within months.

  • Training requests have quintupled.

  • Google searches for “How do I buy a gun?” spiked around major political flashpoints in 2024–2025.

The Pink Pistols — whose famous motto is “Armed gays don’t get bashed” — report similar surges.
One spokesperson says:

“I’ve never seen a surge like this before.”

University of Chicago research confirms the shift, showing Democratic gun ownership rose 7 percentage points between 2010 and 2022 — and has only accelerated since.

Why LGBTQ & Liberal Gun Ownership Is Rising

1. Rising Hate Crimes

Multiple studies show LGBTQ people remain one of the most targeted groups in America.
Between 2020 and 2024, anti-LGBTQ hate crimes increased sharply, fueled by political extremism, anti-trans rhetoric, and online radicalization.

2. Fears of Far-Right Violence

Many in these communities cite growing fear of:

  • right-wing militias

  • extremist rhetoric online

  • political dehumanization

  • attacks on Pride events, drag shows, and LGBTQ community centers

As one gun instructor explains:

“People feel that certain groups believe they’ve been given permission to commit violence.”

3. Political Rhetoric & Government Actions

Public statements from political figures — including talk of “poisoning the blood,” labeling political opponents as “vermin,” and mass immigration raids — have heightened anxiety, especially among vulnerable communities.

Even though the White House denies fueling fear, the numbers tell a different story, as fear-based gun purchases keep rising.

Driven by Protection — Not Political Posturing

Gun-rights experts say that new left-leaning gun owners overwhelmingly purchase firearms for self-protection, not activism or militia organizing.

  • Many refuse to engage in open-carry demonstrations.

  • Most avoid contact with law enforcement during crises.

  • Personal safety — not political identity — is the driving force.

As the Second Amendment Foundation notes:

“More liberals are exercising their right to self-defense — but the reasons behind it are troubling.”

A New Era of American Gun Ownership

Sociologists describe this shift as part of a historic transformation in who owns guns and why.
In 2020–2021 alone, new gun buyers were disproportionately:

  • LGBTQ

  • Black

  • female

  • politically moderate or left-leaning

This trend continues into 2025 as Americans increasingly view self-protection as an unfortunate necessity in an era of rising polarization and targeted violence.
