LONDON — (July 27, 2025) — A staggering 100,000 people filled the streets of Central London on Saturday for London Trans+ Pride 2025, marking the largest turnout in the event’s history — and a clear act of defiance following a controversial UK Supreme Court ruling that redefined “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 as strictly biological.

The march began at Langham Place and made its way to Parliament Square Gardens, where speakers called out the erosion of trans rights in the UK. Among them was Heartstopper actress Yasmin Finney, who delivered an emotional call to action for the trans community: “We are not going anywhere. Our existence is not a debate.”
Also taking the stage was Caroline Litman, a prominent campaigner whose trans daughter, Alice, died by suicide in 2022 after waiting nearly three years for gender-affirming care from the NHS. Litman’s appearance drew silence, tears, and thunderous applause as she demanded systemic change to protect trans youth.
Event organizers said the turnout surged by over 40,000 more attendees than last year — when the 2024 event drew around 60,000.
“We are more determined than ever to show up and let people know that we deserve a place on this earth,” said Bobby Harding, fundraising lead for London Trans+ Pride.
Court Ruling Fuels Resistance
The outpouring comes just months after the UK Supreme Court ruled in April that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refer to biological sex, not gender identity — a legal interpretation that many LGBTQ+ advocates warn will strip away hard-won protections for trans people in public services and workplaces.
Following the ruling, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) issued interim guidance stating that trans women can legally be excluded from women’s spaces, and vice versa for trans men. That includes public restrooms, hospital wards, and single-sex workplace facilities.
Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden defended the move, saying the “logical consequence” of the ruling was that people must use facilities matching their sex assigned at birth. Shortly after, British Transport Police became the first to revise its strip-search policy to align with birth sex rather than gender identity.
Trans+ Solidarity Alliance Responds
Alex Parmar-Yee of the Trans+ Solidarity Alliance emphasized the urgency:
“It’s important to turn up en masse to make sure it’s very clear what the feelings are in terms of the rights we’re fighting for.”
The not-for-profit organization is now lobbying for transparency around EHRC guidance and has announced plans to brief Parliament and coordinate European intervention on UK trans rights.
One of the original founders of London Trans+ Pride, Lewis G Burton, closed the rally with a powerful reminder:
“Our community came together to show what real strength, solidarity, and care look like.”
The Fight for Dignity and Visibility
The record-breaking 2025 turnout signals more than just mass protest — it’s a demand for visibility, dignity, and inclusion in the face of escalating legal restrictions. With youth, celebrities, families, and activists leading the way, London Trans+ Pride reaffirmed its role as a frontline force in the fight for equality.
