CHARLOTTE, N.C. — (05-06-24) — It is now official as United Methodist delegates have ended their ban on Gay Clergy and same-sex marriage, ending 50 years of anti-Gay doctrine.
When asked at a news conference about the historic change at United Methodist, Rev. Effie McAvoy, pastor of Shepherd of the Valley United Methodist Church in Hope in Rhode Island said…“Oh, it didn’t take days, honey,” said McAvoy. “It took decades of activism for a change that was “so very healing,” said McAvoy.
The historic reversals are now being seen as an end to half-century of epic battles and schisms over LGBTQ involvement within the church.
The largest Methodist Church, Presbyterian, Episcopal and Lutheran denominations, have all removed barriers to LGBTQ participation in the pulpit and at the altar.
It’s a great first step on a long journey.
