The University of Kansas has dismantled almost all DEI infrastructure and mandated the removal of gender-identifying pronouns from email signatures, profiles, Zoom/Teams IDs, and university webpages in response to Senate Bill 125 and the Kansas Board of Regents directive.
Lawmakers required KU to eliminate DEI positions, policies, contracts, and training by July 31, 2025, with final compliance steps—especially regarding pronoun removal—completed just before the deadline. Sources report that KU IT has removed pronoun fields from “people” pages and supervisors are monitoring staff compliance.
Institutional leaders, including Chancellor Douglas Girod and Provost Barbara Bichelmeyer, emphasized support resources via “Support and Care” referrals for those affected. Critics warn the vague language of the law jeopardizes free speech and academic inclusion.
