Police arrested Imani McColley, 25, after investigators said he returned to the crime scene to retrieve a cellphone allegedly left behind during the incident.
Deadly Confrontation Outside Rainbow Station
According to NYPD accounts reported by New York media, the confrontation began inside Rainbow Station, located at 203 Eighth Avenue near West 21st Street.
Investigators allege that McColley and Parente became involved in a verbal dispute before the confrontation moved onto the sidewalk.
Police say McColley pushed Parente to the ground and repeatedly kicked and stomped on his head.
Authorities further allege that McColley took Parente’s wallet before fleeing.
Emergency personnel transported Parente to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An employee told ABC7 New York that the confrontation may have begun after McColley was denied access to a basement club within the establishment. Police had not independently established that account as the motive.
Suspect Allegedly Returns for Cellphone
In an unusual development, investigators said McColley returned to the vicinity approximately 20 to 30 minutes after the attack, reportedly seeking a cellphone he had left behind.
Witnesses recognized him and alerted responding police officers, leading to his arrest.
McColley was subsequently charged with murder and two counts of robbery.
Earlier reporting also identified multiple prior arrests and pending criminal matters involving the suspect. Those cases are separate from the current allegations and do not establish guilt in the Rainbow Station killing.
Court Update: Suspect Reportedly Held Without Bail
An October 20 neighborhood report indicated that McColley had been arraigned on murder and robbery charges and was being held at Rikers Island without bail.
The report also stated that prosecutors were awaiting a psychiatric examination and that an indictment had not yet been filed at that time.
JRL CHARTS has not independently verified a subsequent indictment, court ruling, or trial date as of October 30.
McColley is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Fatal Attack Raises Safety Concerns for Adult Retail Businesses
The killing has drawn attention to public safety surrounding late-night retail establishments in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.
Rainbow Station operates in a commercial corridor with nightlife activity, retail businesses, and pedestrian traffic.
While the violence reportedly began with a dispute inside the adult store, authorities have not accused the business or its employees of criminal wrongdoing in connection with Parente’s death.
For the adult retail industry, the incident highlights the importance of emergency response procedures, employee safety training, and coordination with local law enforcement when confrontations escalate.
The investigation and criminal proceedings remain matters of public interest as authorities seek accountability for the fatal attack.
