Cape Town Pride Parade Set for February 27
The festival’s centerpiece, the annual Cape Town Pride Parade and Mardi Gras, will take place on Saturday, February 27, 2027.
Organizers confirmed that the parade will begin on Alfred Street in the De Waterkant neighborhood before proceeding to Green Point Track, where the Pride Mardi Gras celebration will take place.
The event is expected to bring together local LGBTQ communities and international visitors for a day of visibility, entertainment and celebration.
Cape Town Pride’s 2027 program also includes community-focused activities ranging from workshops and cultural discussions to outdoor recreation and social gatherings.
“Loud in Every Colour” Celebrates LGBTQ Diversity
The 2027 festival theme emphasizes visibility across the LGBTQ spectrum, recognizing identities represented by the rainbow, transgender, bisexual, intersex and asexual Pride flags.
Cape Town Pride Brand Ambassador Nkosinathi Sangweni explained that the theme is intended to ensure the celebration reflects the diversity of the entire community.
Meanwhile, Cape Town Pride CEO Tommy Patterson has connected the 2027 celebrations with the organization’s preparations for WorldPride, emphasizing LGBTQ visibility and the importance of defending equal rights.
Cape Town Prepares for Africa’s First WorldPride in 2028
Beyond the 2027 festival, Cape Town is preparing to become the first African city to host WorldPride, marking a major milestone for LGBTQ visibility on the continent.
The city secured the international hosting rights in November 2024 through a vote of InterPride members, defeating a competing bid from Guadalajara, Mexico.
A South African delegation formally received the WorldPride mantle during Amsterdam’s WorldPride closing celebrations in August 2026.
WorldPride Cape Town 2028 is expected to feature LGBTQ cultural programming, performances, community gatherings and human rights discussions, bringing international attention to the experiences and achievements of LGBTQ Africans.
A Major International Moment for LGBTQ South Africa
South Africa occupies a distinctive position in the African LGBTQ rights landscape. Its constitution explicitly prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, and same-sex marriage has been legal since 2006.
Cape Town’s upcoming Pride celebrations provide an opportunity to highlight those protections while drawing attention to continuing debates over equality, inclusion and LGBTQ human rights across the continent.
With the 2027 festival serving as a lead-up to WorldPride 2028, Cape Town is positioning its annual Pride calendar within a broader international conversation about LGBTQ visibility and community representation.
