Anthony Reyes, 29, of the Bronx, was arrested Oct. 5 in connection with the June 25 attack near Elliot Place and Jerome Avenue, according to information provided to Gay City News. Reyes faces two counts of assault as a hate crime, two counts of menacing as a hate crime and an additional assault charge.

Police reportedly took Reyes into custody at approximately 11:40 a.m. in the same general area where the attack occurred.

The second individual accused of participating in the assault had not been arrested as of Oct. 5, according to an NYPD spokesperson cited by Gay City News.

Attack Came Days Before NYC Pride March

The charges stem from an attack that police said unfolded at approximately 7:30 p.m. on June 25 — just three days before the NYC Pride March.

According to the NYPD’s original account, two individuals approached a 43-year-old man at the intersection of Elliot Place and Jerome Avenue and made anti-LGBTQIA+ statements before pushing him.

Police said the confrontation then escalated as the attackers repeatedly punched and kicked the victim before striking him in the head and body with a blunt object and fleeing on foot. Contemporary reports said the victim suffered serious physical injuries and was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force subsequently investigated the incident and sought the public’s assistance in identifying the two individuals.

One Arrest, One Suspect Still Sought

The arrest marks a significant development in a case that remained unresolved for more than three months.

But the investigation is not over.

With the second alleged attacker still unaccounted for, authorities continue to have an outstanding suspect connected to an assault police have treated as an anti-LGBTQ hate crime.

The case also underscores why attacks involving alleged bias motivation receive additional scrutiny: prosecutors must address not only the underlying alleged violence but also whether evidence supports the hate-crime elements attached to particular charges.

Reyes is accused of the offenses and has not been convicted. The charges against him remain allegations unless and until proven in court.

JRL CHARTS LGBTQ Hate Crime News will continue following developments in the Bronx case, including the search for the second suspect and any subsequent court proceedings.
