WASHINGTON — (March 30, 2026) — Republican leadership is openly acknowledging that healthcare spending cuts are being considered as part of a broader strategy to finance the escalating U.S. military campaign in Iran.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise confirmed that GOP lawmakers are actively reviewing multiple budget options, including changes to federal health programs, as they work to fund a package that could reach $200 billion.

The funding push comes as “Operation Epic Fury” enters its fifth week, with thousands of additional U.S. troops deployed across the Middle East and contingency operations expanding.
Healthcare Programs Under Review
According to Republican leaders, proposed changes are being framed around reducing “fraud, waste, and abuse” in federal healthcare spending. However, policy discussions also include adjustments to Affordable Care Act subsidies that help lower-income Americans afford coverage.
A proposal backed by Jodey Arrington could reduce federal spending by more than $30 billion, but previous Congressional Budget Office estimates suggest such changes could leave roughly 300,000 Americans without health insurance.
While some Republicans argue the reforms are necessary to avoid increasing the national deficit, critics warn that the burden could fall on working families who rely on federal assistance to maintain coverage.
War Costs Driving Budget Pressure
The debate reflects growing financial strain tied to the Iran conflict. Defense officials and lawmakers have already discussed massive funding requirements to sustain military operations, replenish weapons systems, and support troop deployments.
At the same time, the budget negotiations are intertwined with other priorities, including immigration enforcement funding and broader federal spending battles.
Political Divisions Emerge
Not all Republicans are fully aligned behind the strategy. Some moderate lawmakers have expressed hesitation, signaling potential challenges in securing enough votes to pass a final package.
Representative Don Bacon indicated that details remain unclear, highlighting internal uncertainty within the party.
Democrats, meanwhile, have strongly condemned the proposal. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the idea as prioritizing military expansion over essential domestic programs.
Public Support Remains Weak
Polling data suggests the Iran war continues to face significant public opposition, with a majority of Americans expressing disapproval of how the conflict is being handled.
As lawmakers move toward a potential vote within the next 60 to 90 days, the political and economic stakes surrounding the proposal are expected to intensify.
