BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — (March 11, 2026) — Pete Buttigieg delivered a blistering critique of the administration of Donald Trump during a public conversation Monday, accusing the White House of operating under what he described as a “pay-to-play” political culture and raising alarm about immigration enforcement practices across the United States.
The remarks came during a community conversation held March 9 at the historic Carver Theatre, where Buttigieg appeared alongside Randall Woodfin to discuss national politics, immigration policy, and democratic accountability.

During the discussion, Buttigieg mocked what he characterized as a system in which political access can be influenced by large financial contributions tied to projects connected with the administration.
“If you want policy to change, if you want this White House to take care of you, actually it’s surprisingly easy,” Buttigieg said. “Take a million dollars and donate it to the ballroom they’re building in the East Wing. Take another million and put it in the fund for that crypto company. And take another million — that’s about the initiation fee for membership at Mar-a-Lago. That’s how you start getting your calls returned by this White House.”
He added that such a system leaves ordinary Americans at a disadvantage.
“For those of us who don’t have a few million dollars lying around, that’s a problem,” Buttigieg said. “But that’s what we’ve been reduced to.”
The former transportation secretary also criticized the administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement policies, arguing that many Americans expected the government to prioritize deportation of dangerous criminals rather than long-term residents with established lives in the country.
“A lot of people thought they were voting for a government that would focus on violent criminals,” Buttigieg said. “Not someone who has lived here for years, raising children, paying taxes, and building a business.”
Buttigieg also expressed concern about immigration enforcement agents operating with face coverings during raids and arrests. He argued that transparency is essential when government authorities exercise life-and-death power in public spaces.
“It’s not too much to ask that if we’re going to give somebody life-or-death powers walking the streets of an American city,” he said, “that they should at least be expected to show their face.”
The event drew a large audience in Birmingham and quickly circulated online, highlighting the growing national debate surrounding immigration enforcement, political influence, and government accountability.
