VATICAN CITY — March 1, 2026 — In a new biography released this spring, Pope Leo XIV is offering his clearest statement yet on the future of LGBTQ-related teaching within the Catholic Church — and for those expecting a rapid doctrinal shift following the Francis era, the message is measured.

In Leo XIV: The Biography, the first American pontiff acknowledges the deep polarization surrounding LGBTQ issues inside the global Church, but signals that official doctrine is unlikely to change in the near future.

“It seems to me very unlikely, at least in the near future, that the doctrine of the Church will change its teachings on sexuality and marriage,” Leo states in the book.

A Different Tone — But Not a Doctrinal Shift

While Pope Leo indicates that formal Church teaching will remain intact, he emphasizes the importance of pastoral tone and internal attitudes.

“We must first change attitudes,” the pontiff explains, referencing the broader outreach approach taken by his predecessor, Pope Francis.

Francis famously signaled a more inclusive posture toward LGBTQ Catholics during his papacy, including approval of blessings for individuals in same-sex unions and public calls for greater compassion within the Church. Leo appears to reaffirm that pastoral emphasis while drawing a distinction between inclusion and doctrinal reform.

“Everyone is invited in,” Leo says in the biography. “But people want doctrine to change and attitudes to change. I believe we must first change attitudes before even thinking about changing what the Church teaches.”

Same-Sex Blessings to Continue

Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, who heads the Vatican’s doctrine office, recently indicated that blessings for individuals in same-sex unions — introduced during Francis’ tenure — are expected to remain in place.

However, Church leadership continues to differentiate such blessings from sacramental marriage.

Observers note that Leo’s position reflects continuity rather than reversal: a pastoral openness paired with doctrinal restraint.

Tensions Remain

The issue remains globally complex. In Argentina, a Catholic marriage involving two transgender individuals is reportedly under review within a diocesan investigation, underscoring the nuanced challenges facing Church administration in different regions.

Within Catholic communities worldwide, reactions to Pope Leo’s comments are likely to vary — particularly among LGBTQ Catholics seeking recognition of same-sex marriage or expanded acknowledgment of transgender faithful within Church life.

For now, Leo’s message appears steady: tone may evolve, but official teaching remains unchanged.
