Taiwan Hit by Powerful 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake; No Major Damage Reported
TAIPEI — (December 29, 2025) — A powerful earthquake registering 7.1 on Taiwan’s local scale — and about 7.0 according to the U.S. Geological Survey — struck off the northeastern coast late Saturday night, shaking communities across the island and prompting safety precautions from authorities.

The epicenter was located approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) east of Yilan County Hall, at a depth of nearly 73 kilometers, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration. Tremors were widely felt in cities from Taipei in the north to Taichung in the west, with intensity levels reaching Category 4 on Taiwan’s seismic scale.
Although there have been no immediate reports of widespread structural damage or fatalities, isolated impacts were documented. More than 3,000 homes briefly lost power in Yilan County, and several buildings reported minor water and gas leaks.
Major transportation systems — including Taiwan High Speed Rail and urban metros — experienced temporary disruptions as trains were briefly halted or slowed as a safety precaution following seismic alerts.
Global semiconductor leader TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) also enacted emergency protocols that led to precautionary evacuations at some facilities in the northern science parks, though operations were later confirmed to be stable and staff returned to work.
Officials urged residents to stay alert for possible aftershocks in the coming days and to follow guidance from disaster response agencies as assessments continue. Taiwan’s location along active tectonic boundaries makes powerful earthquakes a frequent natural threat.
