PALM DESERT, CA — (December 14, 2025) — The LGBTQ community is pushing back after Palm Desert Mayor Pro Tem Joe Pradetto introduced a proposal that would end the city’s formal recognition of Pride Month, including the removal of the Pride banner traditionally displayed at City Hall.

The proposal was raised during Thursday’s Palm Desert City Council meeting, where Pradetto argued that recognizing Pride Month places emphasis on one group over others and, in his view, risks creating division rather than unity.
Two additional council members signaled support for revisiting the city’s existing policy, setting the stage for a broader debate that has already sparked strong reaction from LGBTQ residents, advocates, and allies.

LGBTQ Leaders Warn of “Erasing Visibility”
Critics of the proposal say the move would undermine years of progress toward inclusion and visibility, especially at a time when LGBTQ rights are facing renewed challenges at the local and national level.
Community members argue that Pride Month recognition is not about favoritism, but about acknowledging historical discrimination and affirming the city’s commitment to equality and safety for LGBTQ residents.
The proposal, they say, sends the opposite message.
What Happens Next
City officials say the earliest the issue could return to the council agenda would be the second meeting in January, though consideration may be delayed until February.
Any initial discussion is expected to occur during a study session, a format designed to allow extended discussion and public input before formal action is taken.
The scope of any potential changes will be determined through that public process.
