DENVER, CO — (December 2, 2025) — Community leaders in Denver are sounding the alarm after YouthSeen, a respected LGBTQ youth mental health and wellness organization, was forced to close its doors indefinitely following a targeted robbery that wiped out the nonprofit’s entire emergency fund.

According to YouthSeen, a male suspect entered the building on the Clayton Early Learning campus Sunday afternoon by prying open a side door before heading directly toward the office where the organization’s safe was kept. Security footage shows the suspect moving swiftly through the workspace, grabbing the safe, and fleeing within moments.
Executive Director Dr. Tara Jae told local media affiliate Fox 31 that the safe contained nearly $10,000 — the nonprofit’s full emergency reserve, money used to support vulnerable LGBTQ youth in crisis.
“This feels targeted,” Jae said, noting that very few people knew about the safe’s location. “He came in through the side door, rummaged through things, and went straight for it.”
An arrest affidavit reveals the suspect also stole a second cash box, an iPad, and keys and registration belonging to a vehicle.
Denver police arrested 58-year-old Stephen Guerra on Monday. Officers located him inside a stolen Toyota RAV4 containing two damaged and emptied cash boxes. Guerra has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for sexual assault, felony menacing, and drug-related offenses. He is currently being held for investigation of second-degree burglary.
YouthSeen confirmed that the break-in is the devastating final blow after months of rising safety concerns. The organization announced that it has no choice but to cease operations for now, leaving LGBTQ youth without a vital support center during the holiday season.
“This is the straw that breaks the camel’s back,” Jae said. “We need the community to come together, because safety has become a serious concern for LGBTQ nonprofits.”
The robbery comes just weeks after another LGBTQ center — the Center on Colfax — reported vandalism during a similar string of incidents, raising fears about escalating threats to community spaces serving queer youth.
