Boston Police Hunt 8 Suspects in Brutal Mattapan Hate Crime Attack

BOSTON — (October 1, 2025) — Boston police are asking for the public’s help identifying eight men linked to a violent hate crime assault against a gay couple in Mattapan earlier this month.

The incident occurred on River Street on Sept. 13, when the couple was allegedly targeted with homophobic language before a fight broke out. According to police, one victim was struck in the back of the head with a baseball bat and found bleeding in a parking lot. He was transported to a Boston hospital for treatment.

Detectives with the Civil Rights Unit released images of eight men connected to the investigation. Some of the images are blurry, but descriptions include: one man in a Red Sox hat with a white shirt and jacket, another in a Bass Pro Shop hat, and a bald man wearing round sunglasses. Police noted all eight appear to be Black men.

A police report obtained by Boston.com states the couple was walking toward a convenience and liquor store when a group of men “began making anti-homosexual remarks.” A verbal altercation escalated into violence, spilling into the street.

Witnesses told police that multiple men were seen swinging objects at the victims. The group allegedly split up and attacked both men before fleeing. Investigators have classified the incident as a suspected hate crime.
