According to KSL News Utah, the gunfire erupted as Kirk was taking part in a Q&A session with students. Witnesses described hearing a “huge bang” — not a small-caliber potshot, but the loud crack of a major weapon — before seeing Kirk collapse.

“Bystanders report seeing Kirk shot near his neck during a Q&A with students,” reported the Deseret News.

Campus officials and law enforcement quickly secured the scene. Police have locked down the area and are on the hunt for the shooter. The man seen taken into custody in initial video reports was released by police.
