The year is 1997 in Syracuse, New York. Lucas (Tom Blyth), a promising undercover police officer, is still reeling from a breakup and the death of his father when he’s given an assignment that will test every fiber of his morality—lure and arrest gay men in a mall bathroom. But when one of his targets turns out to be the magnetic Andrew (Russell Tovey), Lucas is caught off guard by an undeniable spark.

As their forbidden connection deepens, the internal pressure from his superiors mounts, forcing Lucas into a dangerous balancing act. The story builds toward an explosive New Year’s Eve reckoning when a misplaced letter threatens to unravel the double life he’s fought to conceal.

Featuring a powerhouse supporting cast including Maria Dizzia, Christian Cooke, Gabe Fazio, Amy Forsyth, and John Bedford Lloyd, Plainclothes made its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and will open in U.S. theaters on September 19, 2025.
