WASHINGTON, D.C. — (August 10, 2025) — President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to preview a White House press conference he claims will “stop violent crime” in the nation’s capital — unveiling an immediate plan to remove the city’s homeless population.

“We’re having a News Conference tomorrow in the White House. I’m going to make our Capital safer and more beautiful than it ever was before. The Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY. We will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital,” Trump wrote, alongside images of homeless encampments in D.C.” Posted Trump.
While promising jail time for offenders — “The Criminals, you don’t have to move out. We’re going to put you in jail where you belong” — Trump vowed the plan would move forward “very fast,” adding, “There will be no ‘MR. NICE GUY.’ We want our Capital BACK.”
The move is expected to hit the city’s LGBTQ+ population particularly hard. Studies estimate that 28% of homeless youth in Washington, D.C., identify as LGBTQ+, as do 18% of the overall homeless population. Advocates say longstanding gaps in shelter services — especially for transgender individuals — mean many will be left without safe housing options.
Trump has repeatedly called D.C. “one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World,” but data from the Metropolitan Police Department shows robberies, homicides, and assaults are down compared to 2024.
The president’s comments come after ordering a seven-day police surge in the capital, with the threat of extending the operation or even initiating a federal takeover of the city. The plan has already drawn concern from LGBTQ+ rights advocates and homelessness organizations warning of a sweeping, disproportionate impact on vulnerable residents.
