MILWAUKEE — (August 6, 2025) — The streets of Walker’s Point will soon be making history — literally. In celebration of National LGBTQ History Month, the intersection of South Second Street and West National Avenue will receive a colorful transformation: rainbow crosswalks honoring Milwaukee’s queer legacy.

Announced by the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project, the installation was approved through the City of Milwaukee’s “Paint the Pavement” program and is scheduled for completion by October 1st.
The vibrant design is being created by artist Jeremy Novy, renowned for his koi fish street art seen across Milwaukee since 2006. His new work will incorporate koi alongside every color associated with the LGBTQ+ community — sending a bold message of belonging.
“This is a place of belonging,” said Michail Takach, President of the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project. “If you’re coming here, you have to be respectful.”

Walker’s Point is no stranger to queer legacy. The area has been a home to LGBTQ spaces for more than 80 years — dating back to 1944 with the Friendly Bar, Milwaukee’s first known gay bar. That very address is now home to Fluid Milwaukee, part of a proud network of seven surviving LGBTQ+ venues in the city.
“A lot of people are shocked when they hear how long we’ve had safe spaces here,” said Takach.
La Cage Nite Club, a Milwaukee nightlife landmark since 1984, is also within the historic zone. Club owner Dave Wolz shared his excitement:
“It’s been a long time coming. I’m thrilled to see it happen.”
The rainbow crosswalks are donor and sponsor funded, and aim to permanently mark the neighborhood as a symbol of inclusion, safety, and pride.
