WASHINGTON, D.C. — (05-06-25) — The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the Trump administration can begin executing its ban on transgender military service members. In a vote of 6-3, the justices blocked a lower court order that temporarily halted the Transgender military ban from being enforced. The court’s three liberals said they would have denied the application.

Transgender Military Ban:

This decision is part of a broader legal challenge to the Transgender military ban, which was initially implemented by the Trump administration back in 2017. The ban has faced legal challenges in lower courts, with some judges blocking its enforcement.

However today, the justices ruling allows the ban to continue while the legal challenges are ongoing.

This will effect the more than 14,700 transgender individuals servicing in the US armed forces. The Department of Defense reported 4,240 active-duty service members, Guard, and Reserve have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria. However, this figure only reflects those diagnosed with gender dysphoria, not necessarily all transgender individuals serving.
