ALBANY, NY — (07-26-24) — Michigan Democratic governor Gretchen Whitmer Gay signs law banning the so called gay and transgender “panic” defenses in criminal cases. The two outrageous defenses that have been used for decades are no longer viable in Michigan courtrooms under legislation signed on Tuesday by the Democratic Governor.
In fact Michigan becomes the 20th state to outlaw the so called gay and trans ‘panic’ defenses, which allow individuals accused of violent crimes to receive lesser sentences by arguing that the victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity caused them to panic.
The outrageous defenses are used in conjunction with other legal strategies to reduce charges and prison sentences. Thanks to governor Whitmer, the new law expands legal protections for LGBTQ Americans in great state of New York.
