ACCRA, GH — (07-26-24) — Ghana’s Supreme Court upheld the country’s six-decade-old law criminalizing gay sex, as the west African country awaits another court decision on whether to authorize harsher penalties upon its LGBT population in a new bill.
The seven-member conservative packed court dismissed a lawsuit challenging the law on Wednesday, with presiding Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie saying the reasoning behind the dismissal will be announced at a later date.
The Ghanaian Criminal Code of 1960 prohibits same-sex sexual acts, calling them “unnatural carnal knowledge.” Offenders face up to three years in prison. The sentence will be lengthened if the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill passed in February takes effect.
If the law goes into effect, the Ghani government will have free reign to intensify their crackdown on its LGBT society.
