WASHINGTON, D.C. — (07-17-24) — President Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, the White House confirmed Wednesday. In fact White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that Mr. Biden tested positive earlier in the day after an event in Las Vegas.

The president was poised to address the annual conference of the Hispanic civil rights and advocacy group UnidosUs, but its president, Janet Murguía, announced that he would no longer be able to attend. Jean-Pierre said the president is vaccinated and boosted and is experiencing mild symptoms.

“He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time,” said Jean-Pierre. “The White House will provide regular updates on the President’s status as he continues to carry out the full duties of the office while in isolation.” said Jean-Pierre.

President Biden’s doctor said in a statement released by the White House said that he had upper respiratory symptoms Wednesday afternoon, including a runny nose and a “non-productive cough.” The doctor added that President Biden’s respiratory rate, temperature and pulse oximetry are all normal, and the president received a first dose of Paxlovid.

The president told reporters before departing Las Vegas, “I feel good.” In a social media post, Mr. Biden thanked people for their well wishes and said that he will “continue to work to get the job done for the American people” while recovering.

Speaking to CBS News’ John Dickerson Wednesday evening, CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jonathan LaPook noted that he was “very interested” that Mr. Biden had been given a dose of Paxlovid.

“He has been on a blood thinner called apixaban, which is Eliquis,” LaPook said. “And Eliquis does have an interaction with Paxlovid, which is why you have to be very careful when you give the two together. The Paxlovid can increase the level of the Eliquis.”

The president arrived in Nevada on Monday for a series of events aimed at reaching core constituencies as he battles calls from within the Democratic Party to withdraw from the presidential race following his startling performance at the first presidential debate on June 27.
