BANGKOK, TH — (06-19-24) — The Southeast Asian nation of Thailand will become the first to legalize same-sex marriage in the region, after the kingdom’s Senate approved a marriage equality bill on Tuesday.  Supporters were over joyed at the passage as supporters are calling it a “monumental step forward for LGBT rights.” in the Southeast Asian nation.

A majority of the Senate voted in favor of passing the bill following a final reading, with 130 senators voting in favor. What shocked many in the conservative country was that only four Senators opposed the bill.

The equality bill now heads to the king for his endorsement. Once the king officially endorses the bill, the law will take effect 120 days after it is published in the royal gazette.

The result of the vote means that Thailand will become the third country in Asia to legalize marriage equality, after Nepal legalized same-sex marriage in 2023 and Taiwan legalizing same-sex marriage in 2019.

Thailand can expect a huge increase in tourism from the LGBT tourists worldwide.
