ACCRA, GHANA — (02-28-24) — Ghana’s parliament passed legislation on Wednesday that critics are calling a draconian anti-LGBTQ law that gives law enforcement more authority to crack down on LGBTQ activists who are promoting LGBTQ civil rights in the West African country.
Gay sex is already punishable by up to three years in prison in Ghana The new anti-LGBTQ bill will also impose prison sentences of up to five years for the “wilful promotion, sponsorship, or support of LGBTQ+ activities”.
“This bill is one of the harshest of its kind in Africa” said Angel Maxine, Ghana’s first openly transgender musician and LGBTQI+ activist.
She told Reuters…”My heart is broken and devastated at the moment, that’s all I can say for now” Angel Maxine, Ghana’s first openly transgender musician and LGBTQI+ activist” said Maxine.
The anti-LGBTQ bill is sponosred by a coalition of Christian, Muslim, and Ghanaian traditional leaders. Following the vote in parliament, the bill will be sent to President Nana Akufo-Addo for his signature.
