HAVANA — (09-25-22) — Cuba held an historic referendum Sunday, on a contentious law — a government-backed “family law” code that would make it legal for same-sex couples to marry and adopt. Plus the law would allow surrogate pregnancies and give greater rights to non-biological parents.
More than 8 million Cubans over the age of 16 were eligible to vote “yes” or “no” on the proposal, which has been supported by the communist government but criticized by right wing conservative Catholics and evangelical church leaders.
The final week of campaigning saw the government flood TV, radio and social media with pro-equality messages, along with glitzy billboards, public rallies and tweets from President Miguel Diaz-Canel himself urging Cubans to vote yes “in favor of democracy.”

Political scientist Rafael Hernandez told news media outlets that the Cuban referendum on same-sex marriage is the “most important human rights legislation” in Cuba since the 1959 revolution.
As soon as the results from the vote are tabulated and released, JRL CHARTS LGBT World News will bring you the results.
