WILTON MANORS, FL — (02-04-22) — LGBTQ activists, Florida LGBTQ and Heterosexual students and local leaders staged a massive protest against the GOP run state’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill last Tuesday night.

According to local media outs, at least 100 people gathered outside the Pride Center in Wilton Manors to rally against yet another anti-LGBTQ bill currently moving through the Florida House of Representatives that would limit conversations about LGBTQ topics in public schools.

The ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill rally hosted by Safe Schools South Florida, urged Republican state lawmakers to “Say ‘no way’ to ‘Don’t Say Gay.’”

“We heard some powerful testimony from LGBTQ students and parents who are worried about what passage of this law would mean,” said city council member Scott Galvin, the organization’s executive director of Safe Schools South Florida. “And the crowd was both electric and mesmerized. We know the event has given hope to youth who may otherwise wonder if their world is letting them down,” said Galvin.

“LGBTQ+ rights are under attack in #Florida again, but we aren’t afraid to push back against hate wherever it grows,” tweeted the South Florida-based Transinclusive Group after the rally. “It’s so important that we remain vigilant and continue to raise our collective voice!”

An 11th-grader in Broward County named Lana Goff told CBS Miami that she’s very worried about the anti-LGBTQ bill.

Conversations about gender identity and sexual orientation “just should be more normalized and talked about in class and not, ‘that’s kind of a touchy subject, let’s not talk about this,’” said Goff, who came out when she was in 7th grade.
