WASHINGTON D.C. — (02-26-21) — Three GOP Lawmakers broke ranks with their party to join Democrats in voting for the Equality Act on Thursday. Reps. John Katko (R-N.Y.), Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) were the only Republicans to vote in favor of the bill.
The civil rights bill aims to extend protections for the LGBT community in education, housing and employment.
The Equality Act bill spear headed by Democrats and the Biden administration, looks to amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, and the Jury Selection and Services Act, by including protections for sexual orientation and gender identity.
GOP critics argued that the liberal Equality Act bill could infringe on religious liberties, however Tom Reed (R-N.Y.) said he’s confident it will provide protections for religious organizations while keeping in line with Americans’ constitutional rights.
The Equality civil rights bill passed the House of Representatives in a 224-206 vote, with every Democrat supporting the measure.
