IOWA — (03-25-19) — A new Emerson poll shows openly gay presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg coming in third place. The gay mayor of South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg has shocked both the media and his contenders.
The poll released by Emerson over the weekend has Pete Buttigieg capturing 11 percent in the crowded Democratic field.
Buttigieg came in behind former Vice President Joe Biden who took 25 percent and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders coming in first place with 24 percent.
“The biggest surprise in this poll is Mayor Pete,” said Spencer Kimball, director of Emerson Polling. “Last week, we saw him inching up in our national poll, and now he’s in double digits in Iowa. America is going to be asking who is ‘Mayor Pete?” said Kimball.

After making history last week by becoming the first openly gay candidate to qualify for Indiana’s Democratic presidential debates, he comes in third place in Iowa.
