WASHINGTON, D.C. — (June 6, 2025) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has reversed its request to close Dupont Circle Park this weekend during the WorldPride 2025 celebrations. This decision follows the intense pushback from LGBTQ+ leaders and city officials.

The initial closure, announced Monday night, cited “a history and pattern of destructive and disorderly behavior from unpermitted activities” during past DC Pride weekends, including $175,000 in vandalism to the historic Dupont Circle fountain in 2023.

MPD Reverses Dupont Circle Park Closure Decision

However, community leaders and residents swiftly protested, arguing that Dupont Circle Park is a vital hub for the LGBTQ+ community during Pride. Social media was filled with calls to reverse the decision.

On Tuesday morning, D.C. Councilmember Charles Allen posted:

“This would be the wrong move. The park is an important part of DC’s Pride celebrations, gatherings, and history. We’re hearing this decision may be reversed by MPD, with some accommodations to protect the fountain, and Dupont Circle Park will remain open this weekend.”

Ward 5 Councilmember Zachary Parker confirmed he spoke with MPD Chief Pamela Smith and was told the decision would be rescinded:

“The park is central to the LGBTQ community, and neighbors will be able to enjoy it this year for WorldPride.”

By Tuesday afternoon, MPD formally rescinded its request to close the park, acknowledging the landmark’s significance to the Pride celebration. The final decision, however, still lies with the U.S. Park Police.

In a statement shared with JRL CHARTS LGBT Politics, an MPD spokesperson said:

“Chief Pamela A. Smith has heard from community members and understands how significant Dupont Circle Park is to the Pride celebration.

The following letter was sent to the U.S. Park Police, formally rescinding MPD’s request to close Dupont Circle Park this weekend. MPD stands ready to support the National Park Service and the U.S. Park Police during this weekend’s events.”

As of this update, authorities have not yet confirmed whether Dupont Circle Park will remain open during the full WorldPride Festival. Stay with JRL CHARTS LGBT Politics for the latest updates as the situation unfolds.
